In reply to your last sentence OP, you should be aware that plenty of people become veterans in the Vocaloid fandom often with lots of obscure favourites; but still love Miku for their own reasons. She isn't always someone's favourite just because they're ignorant that others exist, though I'm sure that can happen. When I myself only knew of the g8, my favourite was Meiko, but now that's changed, since I know of more.
I think part of it is that the popular ones are the ones you see around first. It's nice to think that all the Vocaloids should be equally popular and are all equal in every respect, but the fact is, the success of the popular ones is what spurred the development of most of the others.
